NSF Improvements to Biological Research Collections (BRC)
To: Chairs, Departments in the Biological Sciences and Physical Sciences
From: Heather Daniels, Graduate School
Date: April 22, 2009
Subject: NSF Improvements to Biological Research Collections (BRC)
Deadlines:
Notification of intent to submit is due on Monday, June 1, 2009.
Project Description:
This program provides funds for improvements to network, secure, and organize established natural history collections for sustained, accurate, and efficient accessibility of the collection to the biological research community. The maximum award is $500,000 for individual awards and up to $2,000,000 for collaborative awards. Collaborative proposals among institutions that promote networking of collections will be given highest priority. These proposals should have a scientific rationale and should be interoperable with other networked collections to build a larger continental resource. The program will consider speciment data-basing, geo-referencing, imaging, innovative enhancements for diverse collections or workshops and symposia. Projects involving the application of new and improved curatorial techniques and tools related to specimen preservation, storage and information retrieval are encouraged. Multiple applications from UW-Madison are permitted. However, NSF asks that organizations the house multiple collections, submitting proposals from more than one collection, engage in internal planning activities in order to prioritize the needs of several collections. For this reason, the Graduate School is requesting to be notified of intent to submit.
Eligibility:
UW-Madison may submit more than one proposal.
