H. I. ROMNES FACULTY FELLOWSHIPS
This program, funded by WARF in recognition of the leadership of the late WARF Trustee President H. I. Romnes, is designed to bridge the gap between the Research Committee's initial research support for new faculty and the Mid-Career Award for Faculty Research. This award is intended to recognize and support faculty up to four years past their first promotion to a tenured position (e.g., since July 2006).
The H. I. Romnes Faculty Fellowship awards are made possible by the impressive research efforts of UW-Madison faculty and staff. Technology arising from these research efforts is licensed by our patent management organization, the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF), to industry. Income from successful licenses is returned to the Graduate School to fund a variety of research activities throughout the divisions on campus, including these awards.
A department, a Ph.D. major program unit, or a formally constituted interdepartmental group of six or more faculty members may nominate one faculty member for a Romnes Fellowship. Please feel free to contact your Graduate School Associate Dean (2-1044) with any questions about eligibility or the content of a nomination.
A nomination should include a cover page (example attached) with the nominee name, department, division through which the candidate wishes to be vetted, name of competition, and name/campus address where publications should be returned. A cover letter from the nominator should explain how the nominee was selected, and highlights the major features of his/her work. The primary criteria are the quality, significance, and productivity of the nominee's research, but the Committee also values indications of the quality and programmatic value of the nominee's teaching and service. The cover letter should be followed by an up-to-date curriculum vitae and bibliography of the nominee, no more than five letters of recommendation, up to three sample publications or other evidence that will help the Research Committee reach a decision. Renominations should be updated and submitted as new nominations.
Nominations may be submitted at any time before 4:30 P.M. on November 6, 2009. Please provide 12 sets of the nomination packet (1 original and 11 copies). If publications are submitted, please send only one set. There should be no publications or reprints attached to nomination packets. Materials should be sent to: Research Committee/Graduate School, Romnes Competition, 317 Bascom Hall.
KELLETT MID-CAREER AWARD
This award is comparable in amount and competitiveness to the Romnes Faculty Fellowships and the WARF Professorships, but is intended to recognize and support mid-career faculty, five to twenty years past their first promotion to a tenured position. The Mid-Career award was created to provide needed support and encouragement to faculty at a critical stage of their careers.
The Kellett Mid-Career awards are made possible by the impressive research efforts of UW-Madison faculty and staff. Technology arising from these research efforts is licensed by our patent management organization, the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF), to industry. Income from successful licenses is returned to the Graduate School to fund a variety of research activities throughout the divisions on campus, including these awards.
A department, a Ph.D. major program unit, or a formally constituted interdepartmental group of six or more faculty members may nominate one faculty member for a Mid-Career award. Previous winners of a WARF Professorship are not eligible. Please feel free to consult your Graduate School Associate Dean (2-1044) with any questions about eligibility or the content of a nomination.
