Project Description:
The Science Master's Program prepares graduate students for careers in business, industry, nonprofit organizations, and government agencies by providing them not only with a strong foundation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines, but also with research experiences, internship experiences, and the skills to succeed in those careers. The program is intended to catalyze the creation of institution-based efforts that can be sustained without additional federal funding. This program is also intended to encourage diversity in student participation so as to contribute to a broadly inclusive, well-trained science and engineering workforce.
Eligibility:
The number of proposals UW–Madison may submit as lead institution is limited to one.

Internal Competition Application Instructions:
Notice of intent: Send an email message to gsgrants@bascom.wisc.edu with "NSF SMP " by Friday, September 11, 2009 to inform us of your intention to submit a proposal. Please include the following in your email message:
--PI name
--Title of proposal
--Scientific and workforce areas that will be the focus of the proposal
Applications for internal competition: Send your application for internal competition to gsgrants@bascom.wisc.edu with "NSF SMP " by Thursday, September 17, 2009. Your application for the internal competition should include the following information:
--PI Name
--Title of proposal
--Brief Proposal Description including information on needs assessment that describes that nature of the workforce need, description of how this program will meet it, and how students will gain the breadth of skills, strengths and understanding to succeed in business, industry, the nonprofit sector or government work environments while being well grounded in a major scientific field. (no more than 3-5 pages)
For the project selected, a letter of intent must be submitted using Fastlane. Information about campus procedures for Fastlane is posted on the RSP Web site. The letter of intent deadline is Monday, October 5, 2009 at 5 pm CST. The full proposal is due on Friday, November 20, 2009 at 5 pm CST.
