Project Description:
The program will invest in the repair, renovation, or in exceptional cases, the replacement of existing research facilities. It will not support the construction of new research facilities. The purpose of the program is to enhance the Nation's existing research facilities where sponsored and/or unsponsored research activities and research training take place to enable next-generation research infrastructure that integrates shared resources across user communities. The program will:
- Update existing research facilities at institutions of higher education in order to support research that can adddress the challenges of the 21st century
- Enable academic departments, disciplinary and cross-disciplinary unites or multi-organization consortia to renovate research facilities through the addition or augmentation of cyberinfrastructure.
- Improve access to and increase use of next-generation research facilities
Proposals can be for up to $10 million for a period from 3- 4 years. Approximately 100 awards will be made from $250,000-$2M; 6-10 awrds from $2-6M; 3-5 awards from $6-10M. Projects up to $2M can have a duration up to 3 years with projects over $2M adding an additional year.

The number of proposals UW–Madison may submit is limited to one.

Notice of intent: Send an email message to gsgrants@bascom.wisc.edu with "NSF Infrastructure " by Thursday, May 28, 2009 to inform us of your intention to submit a proposal. Please copy the Associate Dean for Research in your school/college on the notice of intent message. Please include the following in your email message:

--PI/PD Name
--Building/Project Name
Applications for internal competition: Send your application for internal competition to gsgrants@bascom.wisc.edu with "NSF Infrastructure" by Friday, June 12, 2009. Your application for the internal competition should include the following information:
--Department/Program Name
--PI/PD Name
--Building/Project Name
--Estimated Costs including total estimated costs and NSF request (For assistance in estimating costs please contact Teresa Adams, Facilities Planning and Management, tadams@fpm.wisc.edu)
--Brief Proposal Description (no more than 1 page)
The NSF-Academic Research Infrastructure program solicitation will provide detailed proposal preparation and submission instructions. For the project selected, a letter of intent as well as a complete proposal must be submitted using FastLane. Information about campus procedures for FastLane is posted on the RSP Web site. The NSF letter of intent deadline is Wednesday, July 1, 2009 at 5pm CST and the proposal deadline is Monday, August 24, 2009 at 5 pm CST.
