Luce Initiative on East and Southeast Asian Archaeology and Early HistoryTo: Chairs, Departments in the Arts and Humanities and Social Sciences
From: Heather Daniels, Graduate School
Date: October 3, 2008
Subject: Luce Initiative on East and Southeast Asian Archaeology and Early History
Deadlines:
Nominations are due at the Graduate School on Friday, October 17; Applications are due for internal review at 4:30 pm, Friday, October 24.
Project Description:
The Program's goals are to strengthen institutional capacity for training and research in the archaeology and early history of East and Southeast Asia; contribute strategically to development of this field in North America and Asia; and build relationships between individual scholars and institutions in North America and Asia.
Proposals may request funding in only one of the two categories listed below.
New Faculty Position: To support the creation of a new faculty position in East/Southeast Asian archaeology. A grant can be applied toward salary and benefits for the new position. Institutions must commit to make the faculty position permanent at the conclusion of the grant. Grants of up to $500,000 will be awarded for new faculty positions
Collaborative Research: To support a collaborative research project involving North American and Asian institutions. A proposed project should fill critical gaps by focusing on new or underdeveloped areas of research and provide opportunities for training. These grants are intended to support collaborations of an institutional nature rather than individual scholarly research projects. Grants of up to $300,000 will be awarded for collaborative research.
Eligibility:
UW-Madison may submit one proposal. The Graduate School will convene an ad hoc review committee to review the proposals internally and select the project to be forwarded.
