About Our Research
UW-Madison's reputation for excellence is built on more than 150 years of pioneering research. From Stephen Babcock's 1890 invention of a method to test the butterfat contact of milk, through Jamie Thomson's landmark work isolating human embryonic stem cell lines in 1998, discoveries of our researchers have dramatically improved the lives of millions of people over many decades. External research funding for the university consistently ranks in the top three of public universities, and currently supports more than 9000 exciting research projects, some of which will result in astonishing applications that benefit people around the globe.
