Instructions
for Accessing and Completing CITI Training
NOTE: CITI is a protected site. To gain access, every new user must register.
If you have a UW-Madison NetID, you will be automatically registered with CITI when you use your NetID and password to login to the UW-Madison CITI training program. See Steps 1 and 2, below, for instructions on logging in using a NetID and password.
If you have previously registered directly with the CITI Program, e.g., to take CITI training required by another institution, you may access the UW-Madison CITI training by logging in at the CITI Program home page, clicking "Affiliate with another institution" and selecting University of Wisconsin-Madison from the drop-down menu. See Steps 1 and 3, below, for instructions on registering directly with the CITI Program.
If you do not have a UW-Madison NetID and you have no existing registration with the CITI Program, you must register directly with the CITI Program in order to access the UW-Madison CITI training. See Steps 1 and 3, below, for instructions on registering directly with the CITI Program.
1. Go to https://my.gradsch.wisc.edu/citi.
2. If you have a UW-Madison NetID, say “YES” and use the NetID and password to login. If you have a UW-Madison NetID, your registration is automatic when you log in for the first time. If you need to activate your NetID or you cannot remember your password, contact the DoIT Help Desk. Once you log in, the login system displays your name and email address from the campus directory. Review your name and email address and change or complete the information, if necessary. Then click the Submit button.
3. If you do not have a NetID, say “NO” and you will be directed to a page where you can log in directly to the CITI Program. You will select University of Wisconsin Madison from the list of Participating Institutions and then create a CITI username and password. Once you have registered with the CITI Program, you will go to your Learner’s Menu page. On that page, click on "Affiliate with another institution" and look for University of Wisconsin-Madison in the drop-down menu. Selecting UW-Madison from the drop-down menu will bring you to the UW-Madison CITI training courses.
4. Once you get to the Learner’s Menu page, click on the link that says “Click here to complete enrollment,” and you will go to the Course Selection page.
5. On the Course Selection page, check a box for each course you wish to take.
Ÿ Human Subjects Protection Training for Biomedical Researchers, if you are listed only on protocols submitted to the Health Sciences IRB or Minimal Risk IRB.
Ÿ Human Subjects Protection Training for Education, Social & Behavioral Science Researchers, if you are listed only on protocols submitted to the Education IRB or Social & Behavioral Science IRB.
Ÿ Combined Course - Human Subjects Protection Training for Biomedical, Education, Social & Behavioral Science Researchers, if you are listed on protocols submitted to the HS IRB or MR IRB and to the ED IRB or SBS IRB.
6. Once you have checked the box(es) for the course(s) that you wish to take, click on the “Submit” button at the bottom of the page. You will go to a page that lists the course(s) that you just enrolled in. For the human subjects training, you will see “Basic/Refresher Course - Human Subjects Research Gradebook” and either one or two training courses depending on what course you selected:
Ÿ UW Social & Behavioral Course (Stage 1. Basic Course)
Ÿ UW Biomedical Course (Stage 1. Basic Course)
7. At the bottom of that page, click on the link that says “Go back to Learner’s Menu Page.”
8. On the Learner’s Menu page, under the heading “My Courses,” you will see the course you have selected. The course name will appear on the Learner’s Menu page as “Basic/Refresher Course - Human Subjects Research,” regardless of which of the three human subjects protection training courses you selected.
1. To begin the training, go to the “My Course” section of the Learner’s Menu page.
2. Under the heading “Status,” click on the red "Enter" for the course you wish to take. You will go to a Grade Book page listing the course modules.
3. You must complete all the “Required” modules on that page and any “Elective” modules required for the course selected. For Human Subjects Protection Training courses, you must complete one “Elective” module.
4. You must complete the modules in sequential order. However, you may stop at any time and login again as many times as necessary to finish the course. CITI will track which modules you have completed and which remain uncompleted.
5. If you started but did not finish the course in an earlier session, when you log back in, you will go directly to the Learner’s Menu page. Under the heading “Status,” click on the red "Re-Enter" for the course you want to complete.
6. You must obtain a cumulative score (averaged across all “Required” and “Elective” modules) of at least 85% to pass. The Grade Book page keeps a running tally of your scores. You can retake any quiz as many times as you would like to improve your score.
7. Once you have completed all modules within the course and achieved an 85% score averaged across all “Required” and “Elective” modules, your “Status” for that course will show as “Passed” on the Learner’s Menu page.
8. You will be able to view and print a copy of your Course Completion Report by clicking on the link “PRINT” under the heading “Completion Reports.” You can retrieve a copy of this certificate anytime by logging back in to CITI and going to the Learner’s Menu page. Your course completion information will also be automatically entered into the UW-Madison Completion Certificate database.
1. You may also add courses to your Learner’s Menu in subsequent sessions by simply logging in again from the CITI index page. You will be sent directly to the Learner’s Menu page.
2. To add a course to your Learner’s Menu, click on the link “add a course or update your learner groups.”
