FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

International Research Foundation for English Language Education (TIRF) Doctoral Dissertation Grants

TIRF’s aim is to generate new knowledge and to collect and organize existing knowledge about the teaching and learning of English for the purposes of informing educational policy; improving classroom practices; and, ultimately, expanding educational, occupational, and social opportunities for individuals in a global society. TIRF welcomes Doctoral Dissertation Grant (DDG) proposals for 2008. The DDG funding is intended to support worthy applicants who have advanced to candidacy in their doctoral programs and whose dissertation research plans address topics that TIRF has prioritized. Grants of up to $5,000 are available. Smaller sums may be awarded.

Gerald Ford Scholar Award

The Gerald R. Ford Scholar Award in Honor of Robert M. Teeter is an annual award of $5000 given to a doctoral student to support dissertation research and writing on an aspect of the United States political process and public policy, broadly defined. Of special interest is the role and analysis of public opinion in that process. Doctoral students in Political Science, History, Journalism, Communications, Public Policy, Foreign Relations, or American Studies are encouraged to apply.

Financial Assistance for Child Care Fees

If you are an enrolled UW-Madison student parent, you may qualify for financial assistance toward child care fees through the Child Care Tuition Assistance Program (CCTAP). CCTAP financially assists eligible low-income student parents maintain quality child care for their children. CCTAP is funded through student fees recommended by the Student Services Finance Committee and approved by the Chancellor and the Board of Regents. Applications are now being accepted if you are enrolled for the summer 2008-spring 2009 semesters. 2008 Teaching and Learning Symposium

The annual Teaching & Learning Symposium brings together faculty, staff, post-docs, and graduate students to share best practices, celebrate accomplishments, discuss new teaching pedagogy, and explore themes of mutual interest. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the symposium, and the theme celebrates that milestone: "Shaping our Future: Teaching and Learning at UW–Madison." The symposium will explore both what is enduring about teaching and learning at UW–Madison and what has dramatically changed. Issues to be discussed are the lasting values that frame our teaching, changes in what represents pedagogical innovation (and what the future might bring), revolutionary technological changes, and dramatic ways in which our students have changed, and learn. 2008 Wisconsin Entrepreneurial Bootcamp (WEB)

Are you a graduate student in science or engineering who wants to know more about: Key tools and concepts for starting a new firm? How to measure and assess products and markets for ideas? How to understand and use financial analysis? How to form and fund a technology-based startup? The passion and perils of entrepreneurship as a life path? If so, consider applying for WEB- 2008. WEB-2008 will take place July 20-25.

Program activities will include face-to-face sessions with: John Morgridge – Former Chairman/CEO, CISCO Systems, UW alum, WEB sponsor; Steven Burrill Founder Burrill & Co., UW alum, Burrill Business Plan sponsor; Mark Leslie Took Veritas Software from 12 to >5,000 employees; Top UW faculty in entrepreneurship and technology strategy, with science advisory group; Campus and community experts in startups, intellectual property, and funding.

Library Workshops

Campus libraries workshops and tours help you learn how to find what you need quickly and efficiently. They will help you save time when deadlines for papers and projects approach. Most of these are hands-on. And best of all, they're free.

This spring the workshops will cover topics such as: Grants Information, Citations Managers, Internet Searching, Libraries in a Nutshell, and Web-Based Learning Tools.

Writing Center Workshops

The Writing Center offers non-credit classes throughout the semester, held in Helen C. White Hall. Ambassador Charlene Barshefsky: Economic Barriers in the Fight Against the HIV/AIDS Pandemic

Former trade representative for the Clinton administration, Ambassador Barshefsky will address how economic barriers and weak infrastructure are prohibiting the development in Africa and the fight against the HIV/AIDS pandemic. This event is sponsored by Project 40/40, a student global HIV/AIDS initiative to provide financial assistance to more than 40,000 HIV-positive Ugandans without medical treatment.

UW Dance Program Spring Program Concert

Friday, April 25 and Saturday, April 26

Margaret H'Doubler Performance Space, Lathrop Hall

A group work choreographed by guest artist in residence Alan Sener and performed by dance students headlines this concert. Also featured is a new solo choreographed by Bebe Miller and performed by Li Chiao-Ping along with other engaging works choreographed by Dance Program artists Jin-Wen Yu, Chris Walker, Karen McShane-Hellenbrand and Maureen Janson.
