Guide to Graduate Student Life
Dear UW-Madison Graduate Student,
On behalf of the Graduate Student Collaborative (GSC), we want to welcome you to the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Graduate students designed this guide with the hope that you will find it helpful in navigating your community. We have also included some useful hints for being a graduate student in Madison. We know that this campus, with over 40,000 students, can be intimidating and overwhelming. The GSC thinks that we can make your experience a little easier!
We are all here to learn and to earn a degree, but we want to stress that it is important to balance the demanding workload of graduate school with other kinds of beneficial activities. Madison offers a diverse environment, so take a little time to explore the university and the greater community. We have included some of our favorite places as a starting point.
We also want to invite you to become involved with the Graduate Student Collaborative. We welcome all input and are eager for you to become part of our growing organization. Please contact us at (608) 262-0201, GSC@bascom.wisc.edu, or come to one of our many events throughout the coming months.
While we have tried to include as many helpful tips and suggestions as possible, this is by no means intended to serve as a comprehensive guide about all issues that apply to graduate life at UW-Madison or to the city. Both the university and the city are far too rich and complex for us to cover everything in a small book. We do hope, though, that this book will be helpful to you and that it will expedite your transition and adjustment. We think that you will come to love it here as much as we do!
