  • At least 60 credits of course work in comparative literature, including 702; two additional 700-level courses; and at least two 800- or 900-level courses in comparative literature, including 822. (Please note: The 24 credits toward the M.A. are included in the requisite 60-credit minimum for a Ph.D.)
  • No more than 9 of the 60 credits may be at the 400 level. A minimum of three courses must be taken in each of the student's three areas of specialization.
  • The 60 credits will include courses in each of the following areas: archaic and/or classical literature; medieval and/or Renaissance literature; and literature from 1700 to the present. Work completed in satisfaction of the Ph.D. minor will be counted toward the 60-credit requisite minimum.

  • The examination in a second language must be taken by the end of the second semester of graduate study and before the Second Year Examination.
  • The Second Year Examination must be taken in the fourth semester of graduate study. If a candidate enters the graduate program with an M.A. in comparative literature from another institution, the Second Year Examination must be taken in the second semester of graduate study. Students entering with an M.A. in another discipline may take the examination in either the second or the fourth semester. Contact the department for more information.
