To make progress toward a graduate degree, students must meet the Graduate School requirements in addition to the requirements of the department or program. See Graduate School degree requirements.

Thesis is recommended. In lieu of a thesis, and in consultation with the M.A. advisor, students may take an additional graduate-level seminar, resulting in a seminar paper. The degree should be completed by the end of full-time study, usually at the end of the fourth semester.

At least two years in one REECA language is required; enrollment in a language course is required each semester for the duration of the program.
