Candidates must take an Italian seminar each semester until the candidate passes the preliminary examinations. In any given semester, this requirement may be waived upon approval by the associate chair for Italian.

Candidates must pass a written and an oral examination by the end of the fourth semester and before the beginning of the fifth semester, although earlier is possible.

  • All post-master's candidates must pass the qualifying examination within the first two semesters and before beginning the preliminary examinations. Italian candidates will be given one opportunity to pass the qualifying examination.
  • Candidates must pass preliminary examinations by the end of the fifth year of graduate study (or third year after completion of the M.A.).

Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in speaking and writing Italian by obtaining a grade of B or better in an advanced conversation and composition or stylistics course. Native speakers of Italian or students with a superior command of written or spoken Italian are exempt from this requirement.
