FRENCH Criteria for Satisfactory Progress To make progress toward a graduate degree, students must meet the Graduate School requirements in addition to the requirements of the department or program. See Graduate School degree requirements.

Candidates must complete French 626 and French 825, and four literature courses or seminars (600 level or above) from four of the seven areas in the program: Medieval, 16th, 17th, 18th, 19th, 20th centuries and Francophonie.

Candidates must complete literature courses or seminars in the three areas not studied for the M.A.; an additional course or seminar must be taken in each of two of the five areas not covered in the field examination; a minimum of three seminars is required; French 626 and 825 are required if not already taken for the M.A. Medieval specialists must take appropriate courses in philology and paleography.

Candidates must pass a written and an oral examination by the end of the fourth semester and before the beginning of the fifth semester, although earlier is possible.

Candidates who enter the program with an M.A. in French literature from another university and successfully pass an oral qualifying examination are exempted from the written M.A. exam. The qualifier is taken in November of the first year in the program. Candidates should normally take the field examination after completion of the M.A.

Candidates must enroll for a minimum of 9 credits each semester.

Dissertators must submit a progress report each year to be reviewed by their advisor; pre-dissertators must enroll for a minimum of 9 credits each semester. Waivers are granted in exceptional circumstances.
