A minimum of 24 credits is required exclusive of thesis/research credits; at least 12 must be in courses other than independent reading.

Unless waived by the Graduate Program Committee, a minimum of 32 credits beyond the master's degree including a minimum of 12 credits in C&I. All 12 credits must be graduate-level courses numbered 500 and above, taken in the department at UW-Madison (excluding 690, 699, 990, and 999). This minimum must be satisfied before a student applies to take the preliminary examination. Also required: at least 9 credits of graduate course work in research methodology at UW-Madison.

A comprehensive master's examination is required. This exam must be taken within eight years of matriculation.

The preliminary examination must be passed within three years of full-time study after formal admission to the program. Five-year rule: Candidates for a Ph.D. degree who fail to take the final oral examination and deposit the dissertation within five years after passing the preliminary examination are required to take another preliminary examination and to be admitted to candidacy a second time.

A master's project is required in the form of a paper, thesis, or substantial study project. The master's degree must be completed within eight years of matriculation; degree credits older than eight years will not be counted.
