Description: Instituted in 1882. Considered to be one of the best schools in New Zealand. . Usual admission requirement is the University Entrance, Bursaries, and Scholarships Examination (final secondary school credential usually taken in Form 7 - Year 13); University Entrance Certificate (administered before l986 - grade 12) .

Language of instruction: English.
Master's: 1-2 years after specified first degree. Not all degrees classified, those that are can be awarded with honours in class I, class II division i, or class II division ii. If insufficient for honours, degrees may be awarded as pass. Degrees may also be awarded with distinction.
Ph.D.: 2 years minimum after specified degree; by research, thesis and oral examination.
